Why Is It Called Red Lodge?

Long before Red Lodge became a mountain town, this valley was part of the homeland of the Apsáalooke (Crow) people, who came here to hunt, rest, and gather. The name “Red Lodge” has roots in Crow history and is associated with a lodge that was painted red. Today, the name is a reminder of the area’s much older history and the people who knew this beautiful valley long before the town was established.
